Cornelis W. Koutstaal, Ph.D., CCC-A/SLP

Dr. Koutstaal passed away in the spring of 2005, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. In his memory, a video otoscope (a teaching otoscope) was purchased for the Truman State University Speech and Hearing Clinic.

Dr. Cornelis W. Koutstaal served as Head of the Division of Human Potential and Performance at Truman State from 1991 until his retirement in the fall of 2001. Dr. Koutstaal joined the faculty here as a professor of Communication Disorders after serving as the Executive Director of the Delano Medical Management Corporation (1987-1991), Dean of Ithaca College (1979-1987), Chairman and Professor of Speech at Brooklyn College, C.U.N.Y. (1974-1979), and Professor of Speech at Bowling Green State University (1966-1974). He had the distinction of being dual-certified in both speech-language pathology and audiology by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association.

In 2000, Dr. Koutstaal concluded his multi-year Rotary Club project to bring audiology services and hearing aids to people in need in Belize. Dr. Koutstaal completed his doctoral degree in Speech and Hearing Science at Case Western Reserve University. He published 44 articles, 2 films, and 1 book. He presented many papers related to his research interests in nasality, dialect, relative intensity, distinctive features, and international professional experiences.

His interests included music, landscaping, camping, reading, and travelling to such places as Europe, Asia, Central America, Africa, and throughout the U.S.

Kees is mourned by many colleagues and former students, as well as his children, grandchildren, and his wife Murilyn. She continues to make her home in Kirksville.
