In the summer of 2003, Truman State University and the Scottish Rite agreed to co-found and support a new program to prevent literacy problems in children who are at high risk. Services to children and their families are provided by students and faculty of the Truman State University Communication Disorders program, with the generous support of the Scottish Rite. The Scottish Rite provided funds for furnishings and materials, faculty training, and other program start-up expenses.

Beginning in fall, 2003, children were receiving services in the newly refurbished space on the second floor in Barnett Hall, called the RiteCare --Communication Disorders Early Literacy Lab (ELL).
Services are targeted for children preschool through 3rd grade, many of whom also have mild to moderate problems with speech or language. Appointments for evaluation and general inquiries should be directed to Connie Ikerd, program and clinic secretary at 660-785-7414. The ELL is directed by Dr. Janet Gooch.
